While my husband doesn’t ACTIVELY try to ruin Christmas like the Grinch did, it’s no secret that I am way more into the spirit than he is. At least, that’s the way it was in the beginning. Having been together for 11 Christmases now, he seems to be changing his tune, hahaha! Even if he wasn’t into everything from the start, I know he enjoys our traditions, including our yearly ornament exchange.

However, it wasn’t until our first Christmas living together that I started the Grinch ornament tradition. As I blared the Christmas music, tore into boxes of decorations like a fiend, and declared rather fiercely that I was serious about cutting down our own tree in the freezing Indiana temperature, I could see the green start to wash over his face and his eyebrows start to curl… The grumbling and muttering ensued for the rest of the season. My very own Grinchy Claus!
In true Grinch fashion, over the years we’ve been together I can see that his Christmas heart has grown a few sizes, too. I catch him humming Christmas tunes long before the calendar deems it acceptable, he can quote my favorite Christmas movies almost as well as I can (I don’t even have to beg to play them anymore!), and his face lights up as we stand underneath the huge tree downtown.
This year, in honor of my beloved Grinchy Claus, I decided to decorate one of my two trees (yes, two) in Grinchy style, and trick out the rest of the room with a few Grinchy touches as well.
To start, I used some Grinchy green fabric around the windows (clearance table runners for $2!!!) and some wacky colored tinsel garland swags.
I added some fun floral picks to colorful vases I already owned (yay for free things!).
To add a little fun at my desk (since this tree is in our office room), I swapped out my pencil cup for cute little Cindy Lou I bought last year at Barnes & Noble’s after Christmas sale.
Of course, we have to have the Grinch himself, along with his trusty pal, Max!
And I couldn’t resist a silly bent Grinch tree…
For the real Grinch tree, I modeled it after the plain and almost child-like decorations of the Whoville Christmas trees from the original movie/book.
I used the star I made for our first Christmas tree together as the topper :)
Given the fact that I am on a strict budget this year, I made most of the rest of the decorations out of cardstock I already had on hand.
A paper chain just like I made as a kid and some fun colorful shapes were just the ticket!
I finished it out with a few ornaments from our collection that fit the theme, and of course, his Grinch ornaments.

“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.”
“Maybe Christmas… perhaps… means a little bit more!”
Christmas may not come from a store, but I sure do love my Ginchy Hallmark ornament tradition…
